For the second time in just over two days, the ongoing ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 witnessed a huge upset. On Sunday (October 15), Afghanistan beat defending champions England by 69 runs and pulled off one of the greatest upsets in the history of the competition. And on Tuesday (October 17), it was South Africa’s turn to face an upset.
The Proteas, who started their World Cup campaign with two stunning wins over Sri Lanka and Australia, succumbed to a 38-run defeat (DLS method) against Netherlands in Dharamsala. The Temba Bavuma-led side never really looked in contention to win the game after the Netherlands recovered from a poor start with the bat and posted a competitive total of 245/8 in the allotted 43 overs.
Asked to bat first, Netherlands were reeling at 50 for 4 at one stage before being reduced to 112 for 6. Even the 200-run mar was looking like a distant dream for them. However, captain Scott Edwards stood firm at one end and scored an unbeaten half-century to propel his side to a big total. He scored 78 runs off 69 balls with the help of 10 fours and a six. Roelof van der Merwe (29 off 19) and Aryan Dutt (23 off 9) also came up with crucial cameos for the Dutch outfit.
Iceland Cricket Trolls South Africa:
In reply, South Africa were all out for 207 runs. The Proteas kept losing wickets at regular intervals and lost 5 wickets even before reaching the 100-run mark. At one stage, they were reeling at 147 for 8. A 40-run knock from Keshav Maharaj then gave the scoreboard some respectability.
Following the loss, South Africa has become the butt of all jokes on the social media once again. The African country is known for underperforming in important games and has been given the title of choker for the same reason. And with the Netherlands beating them, the fans decided to have some fun at their expense.
Even Iceland Cricket’s official handle on X (formerly Twitter) also decided to troll them. They shared an old post where they had predicted that South Africa’s great start in the ongoing World Cup will come to an end with the passage of the time.
