Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have issued an official statement about Dewald Brevis’ contract after veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin’s recent revelation. The franchise confirmed that all procedures for signing Brevis as a replacement player in the IPL 2025 fully followed the league’s rules and regulations.

Ravichandran Ashwin revealed that Brevis secured a contract with the Chennai Super Kings above his base price. Notably, Brevis was signed as an injury replacement for Gurjapneet Singh in IPL 2025 for ₹2.20 crore, the same amount CSK had paid the Tamil Nadu left-arm pacer during the mega auction.

"Chennai Super Kings categorically clarifies that all actions taken by the franchise during the signing process of Dewald Brevis as a Replacement Player during TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 were in complete compliance with the rules and regulations of IPL," the official statement read.

“Dewald Brevis was signed in full accordance with the IPL Player Regulations 2025-27, specifically clause 6.6 under ‘Replacement Players’,” the five-time champions’ statement read further.

IPL Rules on Replacement Player Signings Explained

Chennai Super Kings confirmed that their signing of Dewald Brevis followed Clause 6.6 on ‘Replacement Players’ in the IPL Player Regulations 2025-27. The rule states that any replacement must be contracted for a league fee not exceeding that of the injured or unavailable player.

“A replacement Player signed pursuant to either paragraph 6.1 or 6.2 can be recruited at a League Fee which shall not be more than the League Fee that would have been payable to the injured/unavailable Player for the relevant Season. If a Replacement Player is recruited during a Season, the League Fee actually paid to him will be reduced to take account of the Franchisee’s matches during the relevant Season which took place before he was registered and any other relevant deductions under the Player Contract.”

CSK’s ₹2.2 Crore Brevis Signing Under Replacement Rule

The Super Kings had to sign Dewald Brevis under the league’s “Replacement Players” clause, where the amount cannot exceed the fee of the player being replaced. CSK paid ₹2.2 crore, the same figure as Gurjapneet Singh’s deal, to bring in the South African batter, whose base price had been ₹75 lakh.

The Johannesburg-born batter was signed by Super Kings on April 18, 2025, at the halfway stage of the season, when CSK were struggling with only two wins from their first seven matches.

Brevis scored 225 runs in just six matches at a blazing strike rate of 180, with two half-centuries to his name. He added much-needed stability to the five-time champions’ campaign. Notably, Brevis had gone unsold in the IPL 2025 mega auction, despite his talent.
