The CSK team shocked all when they accepted trading Ravindra Jadeja out for Sanju Samson. With this move, they have been left short of spinners, a team that has been dominated by a great spinning deck due to their home ground advantage at the Chepauk.
The Chennai Super Kings have always remained dependent on their bunch of quality spinners. They have featured a few of India's finest spinners like Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, and Harbhajan Singh, over the years.
CSK's liking for spinners is due to the help for spin bowlers at their home ground in the MA Chidambaram Stadium. However, this time around, with Ashwin's retirement and Jadeja being traded off, CSK are left with a shortage of spinners for the upcoming season.
CSK and RCB tussle over 2 former Mumbai Indians players
Currently, Chennai Super Kings features only Noor Ahmed as the lead spinner of the side, while they also have some Indian domestic options like Shreyas Gopal, and have some part-time options like Dewald Brevis.
They are on a serious quest to include another major spin bowler in their side. According to Rohit Juglan from RevSportz, CSK veteran MS Dhoni was very impressed by Vignesh Puthur's stunning display against them back in 2025 at Chepauk.
Puthur went on to have a fine season with the Mumbai Indians despite limited opportunities. RCB has also been in the quest for a backup spinner, despite having Krunal Pandya and Suyash Sharma in the side.
Maybe they are citing a lack of form or injury to bring in a backup spinner. Another MI spinner, Karn Sharma, might be in high demand over the same.
Matheesha Pathirana is a major bid in the mini-auction; Can CSK use RTM?
Chennai Super Kings have released one of their signature players in Matheesha Pathirana. The speedster has played for CSK since the start of his IPL career and slowly made a name for himself under the Men in Yellow. His release has brought in a huge amount of purse to the Super Kings.
Pathirana can be a high-end bid in the mini-auction, with franchises like KKR having the spot for an overseas pacer vacant. Even the Gujarat Titans and the Punjab Kings might be interested in the Lankan pacer, considering their poor show at the death overs last season.
With this being a mini-auction, Chennai Super Kings would not have the opportunity to retain any of their previously held players, and hence, this would mark the end of Pathirana in yellow shirts.
Who will be Pathirana's replacement in the Chennai Super Kings?
Chennai Super Kings might have noticed the growing calibre of Nathan Ellis in the shortest format of the game. Ellis fits in with the experienced model, often desired by the CSK management, and bowled very well during India's recent tour to Australia.
Ellis might be Chennai's go-to bowler to replace Pathirana, and the Australian possesses some breathtaking skills with the white ball, in the powerplay, middle overs, and death overs.
Moreover, with the huge purse, Chennai Super Kings might also be targeting Cameron Green or Liam Livingstone in their middle-order, who can also bring along an additional bowling hand.
