Urvil Patel, the wicket-keeper batsman from Gujarat, was one of the most anticipated players before the onset of last year's IPL auction, especially after he hit two magnificent centuries playing in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

Despite the high level of performance in the domestic tournament, he did not find any buyers on the auction table. However, despite not being picked initially, he was given a late call from two big franchises in the IPL.

Patel, who eventually signed with the Chennai Super Kings, revealed that he was first called up by the Royal Challengers Bangalore, the champions of the IPL 2025 edition.

Urvil Patel reveals on a call-up with the Royal Challengers Bangalore

He said that he seemed very excited about getting the offers from two such big franchises in the IPL. He cited that Devdutt Padikkal's injury was the reason that RCB searched for a replacement in the young Gujarat batter.

"Jab pehli mujhe pata chala toh bahut excited tha kyunki ek din mein do news mere liye acchi this kyunki pehle call aaya tha mujhe RCB se. Devdutt Padikkal shayad injured the, toh unki jagah pe voh replacement dekh rahe the, toh pehle udhar se call aaya tha," Urvil Patel said on the GC podcast.

"But they said that my getting picked wasn't a certainty. They asked me to attend the trials with them for 15 days," added the wicket-keeper batsman.

Urvil reveals why he joined CSK for IPL 2025

The dynamic batter who has played a major role for Chennai Super Kings, coming into bat at no. 3 for the Men in Yellow, went on to score some promising thirties. He ended up scoring two 11-ball 31s and a 37 off just 19 balls.

He replaced the Delhi wicket-keeper batter Vansh Bedi, who was initially picked by the Chennai Super Kings.

"An hour later, I got a call from CSK, Srikanth sir, from the scouting team. So he told me that 'we are looking at you as a replacement player, so be ready.' So I told him, 'Sir, I got a call from RCB as well.' So he said that CSK was sure and was just waiting for the BCCI's approval to sign me up," said Urvil.

Urvil Patel revealed that he was on vacation with his family when he got the call and could not believe what had just happened to him in the last hour.

Urvil sidelined, former RR skipper to replace MS Dhoni in CSK

Now, after Urvil Patel has been drafted into the CSK team, the uncertainty over MS Dhoni's participation in the upcoming seasons in the IPL has increased. Patel, with his performance, did not harm his chances of getting retained for the upcoming seasons.

However, some social media speculations have claimed that not Urvil Patel but CSK are citing former Rajasthan Royals skipper Sanju Samson for replacing MS Dhoni in the upcoming seasons.

Mayank Agarwal eventually replaced Devdutt Padikkal in the RCB side that went on to win the IPL 2025 title.
