The former Australian batter Damien Martyn was admitted to hospital last week after suddenly falling unwell at his home. Doctors later confirmed that the 54-year-old was suffering from meningitis, a serious illness that affects the protective layers around the brain and spinal cord.

Due to the severity of his condition, Martyn was placed in an induced coma at the Gold Coast University Hospital in Queensland so doctors could stabilize him and begin treatment.
