Sydney Thunder skipper David Warner suffered an injury while batting during the match against Brisbane Heat in the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL) 2025-26. Wicketkeeper-batter Sam Billings said that the injury looked more serious than he first thought and believed Warner had hurt his quad.
Sydney Thunder put up a total of 180 runs for six wickets in their 20 overs after choosing to bat first at the Gabba on Saturday, January 10. David Warner was in great form and looked on course for a century, but his innings ended in the 16th over when he was run out after scoring 82 runs from 56 deliveries.

David Warner did not come out to field in the second innings. He picked up the injury earlier while batting and also suffered from cramps in the hot conditions. He looked uncomfortable towards the end of his innings, so the team decided not to risk him.
Chris Green has taken over as captain for Sydney Thunder in Warner’s absence. Sam Konstas has come in as the substitute fielder. Brisbane Heat started their chase with captain Usman Khawaja opening the batting alongside Jack Wildermuth.

He's Done His Quad - Sam Billings on David Warner
During the break after the first over of Brisbane Heat’s innings, Sam Billings spoke to the commentators on the mic and gave an update on David Warner.
He said that the injury appeared more serious than first thought and believed Warner had hurt his quad. Billings also clarified that the injury happened before the run-out and admitted it was not an ideal situation for the team.
"I think it might be a little bit worse than that. Unfortunately, I think he's done his quad. So, yeah, not ideal. And it was before I ran him out, by the way," Billings said.

Sydney Thunder chose to bat first after winning the toss, becoming the first team this season to do so. They lost Matthew Gilkes early for 10 just after the powerplay, and Cameron Bancroft struggled at No. 3 before getting out for 4.
Warner held the innings together at the top and kept the Brisbane Heat bowlers under pressure. Warner found solid support from Sam Billings, and the pair built the innings well. They took the Power Surge in the 13th over and scored 29 runs in that phase.
The left-handed batter reached his fifty in 42 balls and looked set for a century before a run-out ended his knock on 82 from 56 balls in the 16th over. Billings played some fluent shots but got out for 34 in the 18th over.
Nic Maddinson added quick runs with 21, while Chris Green stayed unbeaten on 12 as Thunder finished on 180 for 6 in 20 overs. For the Brisbane Heat, Matt Renshaw picked up 2 wickets for 29 runs in 4 overs. Xavier Bartlett, Matthew Kuhnemann, and Tom Balkin bagged one wicket each.
