Deepak Chahar has set his sights on the T20 World Cup this year as he looks to cement his spot in the Indian team for the marquee event. The right-arm pacer has endured a tough period in recent times due to a spate of injury setbacks and family reasons.

He struggled with hamstring and back issues in recent months. Deepak Chahar missed the entire IPL in 2022 due to a back injury before missing six games in 2023 due to a hamstring injury. The Rajasthan star also missed the last two editions of the T20 World Cup due to injuries.

He made his much-awaited return to the Indian team during the T20I series against Australia after the ODI World Cup but could play only one game before pulling out of action due to his father’s health issue. He also withdrew from the South Africa tour due to the same reason and has not played an international game since the Raipur T20I against Australia on December 1.

Deepak Chahar eyes T20 World Cup:

Deepak Chahar is now determined to win his place back in the Indian team ahead of the T20 World Cup. In a recent interview, he reiterated the importance of his father in his life before explaining the reason behind his decision to pull out of the South Africa tour.

“For me, my father comes first. I am here only because of him. Whatever I have achieved is because of my father. If I am not there for him in those situations, then obviously, what kind of son I am?” Deepak Chahar told PTI.

“If the series was in India, then I would have surely tried to play. You can come to the hospital if you need within 4-5 hours. But obviously, (from) South Africa it takes 2-3 days to come back. It was an easy decision to be with my father — any son would do that,” he added.

Speaking further, Deepak Chahar explained that the lack of cricketing activities was the reason behind his absence from the Indian team for the three-match T20I series against Afghanistan earlier this month. After his father’s health improved, he went to the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru and is now fully fit.

“I was with my father in the hospital for 25 days. He was not in Agra. He was admitted in Aligarh. We all had to stay there. I was only able to do some exercises. I was not able to do any cricketing activities. That’s why I was not ready for the Afghanistan series. I had not practised for a month or so.

“After that I went to the NCA. I started my practice again and now I am fully fit. Everything is good. I trained really hard for the IPL and the World Cup,” said Deepak Chahar.

Deepak Chahar has played 25 T20Is so far and has picked up 31 wickets. With India not playing any T20I before the T20 World Cup this year, he will have to prove himself in the IPL. A good outing in the competition will very much confirm his selection.
