IPL 2025 witnessed a fairy tale ending with RCB winning their first title in front of a jam-packed crowd at the Narendra Modi Stadium. In this article, we will analyze the performance of the Delhi Capitals.
Delhi Capitals Squad Rating for IPL 2025: 7/10
A part of what was once called the holy trinity of IPL, Delhi Capitals had a tremendous start to the season, winning four games on the trot under the new captain Axar Patel.
The team then lost a match but quickly bounced back to reach 13 points in the points table and needed just two wins in the second half of the tournament to make it to their first playoffs after 2021.
But as luck would have it, they failed to register victories in a couple of games and were eliminated from the tournament.
So, what were the reasons for Delhi Capitals not qualifying for the playoffs after such a good start in the recently concluded IPL 2025?
Experts are of the opinion that one of the reasons why DC couldn't make it to the top four was the instability at the top of the order.
The team tried a number of different opening combinations throughout the season, a move which did not pay much dividend.
The player who was at the centre of it all was KL Rahul. The right-hander played at every position from opening to number five, which did not help Delhi Capitals' cause.
Other than Rahul, it was the form of Faf du Plessis and Abishek Porel that made things difficult for DC as the tournament progressed.
Abishek, who played a few good knocks, wasn't able to score consistently. Faf, on the other hand, sustained an injury in the middle of the tournament and couldn't find his rhythm after coming back.
Axar Patel's unavailability in the last couple of must-win games was another setback for the Capitals as they were made to rejig the balance of the side.
Having said that, there were a lot of positives for Delhi Capitals in the season gone by
One of those was the form of KL Rahul, who scored more than 500 runs in 13 games and held the innings together while batting at different positions.
Highest Run Scorers
Player | Matches | Runs | Strike Rate | 6s |
KL Rahul | 13 | 539 | 149.72 | 21 |
Abishek Porel | 13 | 301 | 146.82 | 12 |
Tristan Stubbs | 14 | 300 | 150.75 | 11 |
Delhi Capitals would be disappointed on the fast bowling front with the likes of Mukesh Kumar and Mohit Sharma, both of whom failed to take wickets at crucial moments in the game.
As far as Delhi's bowling is concerned, Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc was the pick of the bowlers for the team in the first half of the tournament.
Starc's replacement, Mustafizur Rahman, also bowled decently in the last few matches but didn't get support from fellow fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera.
In the spin bowling department, it was the trio of captain Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, and Vipraj that controlled things in the middle overs.
Highest Wicket Takers
Player | Matches | Wickets | Economy | 5w |
Kuldeep Yadav | 14 | 15 | 7.07 | 0 |
Mitchell Starc | 11 | 14 | 10.16 | 1 |
Mukesh Kumar | 12 | 12 | 10.32 | 0 |
