Under former Indian men’s cricket team’s chief selector MSK Prasad’s tenure, India saw the rise of a handful of young players like Prithvi Shaw, Hanuma Vihari, KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal, and many more. While MSK Prasad’s run as a chief selector copped criticism, it undoubtedly sowed the seeds for India’s dominance. The former Indian cricketer has gone on to earmark Devdutt Padikkal doubtlessly as a bright prospect for the future.
Devdutt Padikkal has grabbed the viewers’ attention by amassing a truckload of runs in the domestic circuit. The flamboyant left-handed batsman announced himself on the big stage by earning the emerging player of the tournament award in IPL 2020 by scoring more than 450 runs for the Royal Challengers Bangalore. Before smashing his maiden T20 ton in IPL 2021, Padikkal hammered a monumental 727 runs in the Vijay Hazare Trophy this year, ending up as the second-highest run-getter.
MSK Prasad believes that Devdutt Padikkal will take some time to play Test cricket; however, he asserted that the 20-year old is a bright prospect. Prasad reckons that the southpaw has to perform well one more year in the domestic circuit to play the longest format for India.
“It will take some time for Devdutt Padikkal to break into the longest format. He’s definitely the guy for the future, there are no two ways about it. But if you’re looking at longer formats, maybe he will take one more year of domestic cricket,” Prasad told Sportskeeda.
MSK Prasad thrilled by the collection of top-quality pacers in Indian cricket’s ranks:
The 46-year old believes that along with Prasidh Krishna and Ishan Porel – both of whom have played for India A, Avesh Khan has also emerged as a compelling prospect after performing well in IPL 2021. Prasad backs the above-mentioned cricketers to play for the national team in the near future.
“You have India A bowlers, all these Prasidh Krishna and Ishan Porel have gone through India A cricket. Also, it’s pretty evident the way Avesh Khan bowled in the IPL, he was hitting 145-147 kmph in T20 format, so he will obviously be very helpful to practice with in England. And eventually, these are the guys who are going to play for the country in the future,” he added.
