The 32-year-old New Zealand National Cricket Team opening batsman Devon Conway smashed an absolutely remarkable century in his ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup debut match against England National Cricket Team at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Thursday, October 5.

While chasing the target in the match, Devon Conway showed his intent in the first over by smashing 10 runs. He lost his opening partner Will Young in the second over, but it didn’t have any effect on his batting.

Conway was joined by the 23-year-old Rachin Ravindra in the middle and together they surprised everyone as they annihilated the English bowling unit.

The duo played some remarkable strokes and took the England bowlers to the cleaners, leaving skipper Jos Buttler frustrated. Both the batters played an attacking brand of cricket. They kept batting brilliantly and recorded New Zealand’s highest partnership in men’s ODI World Cup history. They went past a 168-run stand between Lee Germon and Chris Harris against Australia in 1996.

After registering a historic partnership, Devon Conway hit a historic ton as he completed his century off just 83 balls, before bringing out a low-key celebration. His 83-ball ton became New Zealand’s fastest at the men’s ODI World Cup.

Also, opener Nathan Astle had hit a ton on his World Cup debut against England in Ahmedabad in 1996 and now Conway has done the same in the same place and against the same opposition.

Earlier, England lost and the toss and were invited to bat first. Joe Root, who played some beautiful strokes, was the top run-getter for his side as he amassed 77 runs off 86 balls, with 4 fours and 1 six. Also, all the 11 players in the England line-up scored at least 10 runs each and they helped their side post 282/9 on the board in 50 overs. This was the first instance in the history of ODI cricket that 11 batters in a team had reached double figures.
