South Africa’s U19 star Dewald Brevis said that it is a huge honour to be called Baby AB de Villiers. Brevis has been compared to the former South African captain due to similarities in the style of their batting and how they possess some genuine talent for the game of cricket.
Brevis had an amazing outing at the recent ICC U19 World Cup 2022 in the Caribbean, as he broke the record of most runs in one edition of the U19 World Cup, as he made 506 runs at an outstanding average of 84.33. He scored two hundred and three fifties in his six appearances, and also picked up seven wickets at 28.57. He was also named the Player of the Tournament for his batting exploits and contribution with the ball as well.
The likes of Quinton de Kock, Kagiso Rabada, and Aiden Markram all represented South Africa at the tournament over the years, while other global superstars such as Brian Lara, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Sanath Jayasuriya, and Virat Kohli also made a name for themselves at the finals, placing Brevis in elite company.
To Be Called Baby AB, I Am Nowhere Near What AB de Villiers Was: Dewald Brevis
Brevis’ heroics at the U19 World Cup have led to comparisons with Proteas legend AB de Villiers. The style and class of the youngster have seen him dubbed ‘Baby AB’, something he is also extremely flattered about.
“To be called Baby AB…I don’t even know what to say. I am nowhere near what AB de Villiers was. He is a guy I grew up idolizing, he was my role model from the first time I watched cricket. But I love being called that, it’s a real honor and surreal,” the official website of Cricket South Africa (CSA) quoted Brevis as saying.
Brevis’ haul of 506 runs broke the record of India opener Shikhar Dhawan who had made 505 runs in the 2008 edition of the T20 World Cup.
Dewald Brevis smashed 7 sixes and 11 boundaries for his 130-ball 138 for South Africa U19 against Bangladesh U19 in their match for 7th-8th placing at the ongoing U19 World Cup. He had begun his campaign against India U19 with a stroke-filled 65. He then followed it up with a 104 against Uganda. He hit 96 against Ireland and 97 against England in the quarter-final.
The right-handed batter will be seen in the upcoming IPL 2022 mega auction where he has set his base price at INR 20 lakhs.
