Former England captain Michael Vaughan took a hilarious dig at Pakistan after their embarrassing loss against Afghanistan in the ongoing ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.

Afghanistan thrashed Pakistan by 8 wickets to register their second win in the ongoing World Cup. It is also their first-ever win over Pakistan in ODIs after 7 straight losses. Afghanistan had their task cut out with the bat as they had to pull off their highest run-chase in ODIs. And the Hashmatullah Shahidi-led side did that in style.

Batting first, Pakistan posted a competitive total of 282 for 7. Captain Babar Azam (74) and Abdullah Shafique (58) scored half-centuries for their side. At one stage, Pakistan were reeling at 206 for 5 before a 73-run stand between Iftikhar Ahmed and Shadab Khan helped them post a 280-plus total.

In reply, Afghanistan chased down the total with utmost ease. They remained in control throughout the chase and did not let Pakistan have any chance of going on the front foot. In the end, they crossed the finishing line in the 49th over by losing just a couple of wickets.

Openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz (65) and Ibrahim Zadran (87) shared an impressive 130-run stand for the first wicket to give Afghanistan a solid start. Shaheen Afridi broke the stand by dismissing Gurbaz. The breakthrough, however, did not bring any respite for the Men in Green.

Zadran and Rahmat Shah (77*) added 60 runs for the second wicket to steady the ship before the former departed. It was followed by an unbeaten stand of 96 runs between Shah and captain Hashmatullah Shahidi (48*) as Afghanistan crossed the finishing line with ease.

As Pakistan struggled to beat Afghanistan, Michael Vaughan decided to have some fun at their expense. The former cricketer took to X to hilariously take a dig at them as he wrote that Pakistan lost the game only because the ‘Dil, Dil Pakistan’ was not played in the stadium.

“I presume ‘Dil Dil’ Pakistan wasn’t played in Chennai today,” wrote Michael Vaughan.

The England great was referring to Mickey Arthur’s bizarre comment after his team’s loss to India earlier in the competition. After the seven-wicket loss, Arthur had given a bizarre reason for Pakistan’s poor performance, saying:

“Look, I’d be lying if I said that It didn’t seem like an ICC event, tonight, to be brutally honest. It seemed like a bilateral series; it seemed like a BCCI event. I didn’t hear Dil Dil Pakistan coming through the microphones too often tonight.”
