Former cricketers and cricket experts have been sharing their two cents on Rohit Sharma’s unexpected interview during the New Year’s Test—the fifth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) in Sydney.

Many have believed that Rohit just wanted to clear the air about the dressing room drama in Australia; Sanjay Manjrekar felt the Indian captain just wanted to shift the limelight from Gautam Gambhir, who was getting credit for resting him for the final Test match against Australia in Sydney.

Karthik also noted that Rohit’s interview with Star Sports was just to calm the various media reports surrounding the Indian cricket team’s dressing room environment. He further said that Rohit will need some time to reflect and process everything in the next few weeks before he returns to action in the upcoming three-match ODI series against England.

Furthermore, Dinesh Karthik believes Rohit Sharma will be part of the upcoming ODI series against England, but he will need to find his form there ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The cricket pundit also thinks that the interview Rohit gave was to address the speculations surrounding him, saying it was a good move to calm the public and clear up the confusion.

The former Indian wicketkeeper-batter also mentioned that Rohit will take the next few weeks off cricket to spend time with his family after the birth of his second child. During this time, Rohit will reflect on his future and make some important decisions about his future, according to Karthik.

Dinesh Karthik was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz: “I am sure that Rohit Sharma will be part of the ODI series vs. England and the Champions Trophy, and whatever form he finds, he will need to find it there.

"If he finds form, he will feel that he can come back as a Test batter in England. Knowing Sharma, I think that he gave that interview because there was a lot of news floating around. But I do think when he goes back, for the next couple of weeks he has no cricket, he will take his time, talk with his family, and then take a call on his future.”

Karthik further noted, “Before coming to the series, he has had the birth of the baby as well. I think he will spend time with his little ones, but he will also make some decisions. There will be a lot of thoughts in his mind, which he will have to streamline and think about what he needs to do.

"There are decisions to be taken on his behalf and on Team India's behalf because at this point he has made it clear that he is not retiring. It was a good thing that he gave the interview to just cool down and calm down the public because there were a lot of speculations.”
