Dinesh Karthik picks Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant for future India's captaincy

While speaking on Cricbuzz's Ask CB segment, Dinesh Karthik was asked about India's future captain in all the formats. Karthik picked Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant as possible options for India's captain in the future.

The former wicketkeeper-batter added that both the players lead their teams in the IPL which is why both have the chance to become India's captain in the future.

“Two players come straight into my mind who are young, who have the potential, and definitely can lead India in all the formats in the near future. One Rishabh Pant, two Shubman Gill. Both of them are captains in IPL teams and have captained India. I do think in time, they have the chance to become the all format captain for India as well," Karthik said.

Shubman Gill's captaincy debut

Shubman Gill recently led India to a 4-1 series win in the five-match T20I series over Zimbabwe. It was the first time he was leading India in international cricket. Gill is also India's current vice-captain in white-ball formats and is a possible option for the role in Test cricket as well.

Shubman Gill made his international debut in 2019 in an ODI against New Zealand. Since then, he has established his spot in the Indian team. While the youngster is still looking to solidify his place in Tests and T20Is, Gill is already a permanent member of India's ODI team. The 24-year-old has scored 2328 runs in 47 ODI so far at an average of 58.20 and a strike rate of 101.74 with 6 hundreds and 13 fifties.

On the other hand, Rishabh Pant was always on the selectors' radar for the leadership role in Indian cricket. But the life-threatening accident of the wicketkeeper-batter prevented his evolution for some time. However, he has come back into the Indian team with a bang and could be an option for India's future captain.

Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant are likely to be in action in India's upcoming two-match Test series against Bangladesh at home. While Gill will be looking to solidify his No. 3 spot, Pant will be aiming for a comeback in Test cricket. If he gets a chance, it will be his first Test after his comeback from accident. Currently, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant are playing in the Duleep Trophy for India A and India B respectively.
