Team India captain Rohit Sharma prevented all-rounder Axar Patel from securing a hat-trick during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 match against Bangladesh. Rohit Sharma admitted his mistake and stated that he would make it up to Axar Patel by taking him out for dinner the next day after the match.

The India team defeated Bangladesh by six wickets in Dubai on Thursday, February 20. Axar Patel played a crucial role in the victory, picking up two wickets in his bowling. The left-arm spinner was on the verge of securing a hat-trick, but Rohit Sharma dropped a catch in the slips, which denied him the milestone.

Bangladesh suffered an early collapse after opting to bat first, as Mohammed Shami and Harshit Rana dismantled their top order. Axar was introduced in the ninth over of Bangladesh's innings and struck twice in consecutive balls. The spinner dismissed Tanzid Hasan Tamim and Mushfiqur Rahim in his first over.

On the hat-trick ball, Jaker Ali edged one to the slips, but Rohit Sharma dropped the catch. Rohit, visibly frustrated, slapped the ground and apologized to Axar with folded hands for his mistake. Bangladesh were at 35/5 at that stage. The catch could have made it 35/6 and handed Axar a hat-trick.

I May Take Him for Dinner Tomorrow - Rohit Sharma

During the post-match presentation, commentator Harsha Bhogle asked Rohit Sharma about the dropped catch. Rohit admitted that it was a straightforward catch he should have taken. He jokingly added that he might take Axar out for dinner to make up for the mistake.

"I thought you were mentioning about the dropped catch. I may take him for a dinner tomorrow [he dropped a catch that would've given Axar a hat-trick]. That was an easy catch, I should have taken that catch, the standards I have set standing in the slips but these things happen,” Sharma told official broadcasters JioHotstar.

Dinner Pending Hai - Axar Patel

Axar Patel responded to Rohit’s comment about taking him out for dinner after the dropped catch. Posting on his official social media account, Axar reminded Rohit of his promise.

"Wickets in the bag, win on the board… @ImRo45 Dinner pending hai 😆😂," Patel wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter).

The dropped catch proved costly as Jaker Ali capitalized on the opportunity, scoring 68 off 114 balls. He built a crucial 154-run partnership with Towhid Hridoy, helping Bangladesh recover and post 228 in 49.4 overs. Mohammed Shami dismissed Jaker, but the damage had already been done.

In response, India chased down the 229-run target with 21 balls to spare. Shubman Gill anchored the innings with an unbeaten 101 off 129 deliveries, featuring nine fours and two sixes. He added an unbroken 87-run partnership with KL Rahul. Team India will face Pakistan next on February 23 in Dubai.
