Graeme Smith, the veteran Proteas skipper, was named head of Cricket South Africa (CSA), at the end of 2019, and his term was then renewed for another two years in April 2020.

After Smith was named director of cricket in December 2019, one of his first choices was to appoint Mark Boucher, a former teammate, to a four-year deal ahead of England’s tour to South Africa.

Boucher was believed to have been unexpectedly hired without an interview procedure and reportedly lacking the needed Level 4 coaching qualification for the role, according to charges that have since surfaced.

Graeme Smith’s contract with Cricket South Africa expired at the end of March, and with the role scheduled to be advertised, it was inevitable that he would go.

Graeme Smith had not applied for a new position as cricket director: CEO Pholetsi Moseki

As per Sport24, CEO Pholetsi Moseki has stated that the ongoing disciplinary procedure against Graeme Smith is merely for “closure,” and that Smith has not registered for a new position as director of cricket.

“No, after his contract expired at the end of March, he did not remain in the post.” Both parties are now waiting for the arbitrator’s findings, which will bring the case to a close for both sides and allow us to know what will happen in the future.

“In terms of his contract, it expired; there was no [rolling] extension.” “I haven’t seen all of the applications, but he didn’t put his name back in the running for the job,” he added.

“As a result, his work with us came to an end on March 31. We intend to finalize the new appointment as soon as feasible, ideally within the next month or two.”

After his contract expired at the end of March, Graeme Smith was no longer the CSA’s director of cricket.
