Veteran England pacer James Anderson opened up about his verbal spat with Shubman Gill during the last Test against India in Dharamsala. He said that the young batter told him to retire after he sledged him.
The fifth Test between India and England was one of the most fascinating games in the entire series. It saw history getting scripted as James Anderson claimed his 700th wicket in the longest format of the game and apart from that there were a lot of other sensational performances.
James Anderson performed recently for England in the series against India. Even though the visitors lost the series by the margin of 4-1, the veteran pacer was one of the positives for the team on the long tour, which saw visitors playing quality cricket.
During the Dharamsala Test, one of the highlights was the banters between Shubman Gill and James Anderson. The duo exchanged some words between them after the young batter got to his century. However, a few balls later, the pacer removed the batter with the peach.
The verbal spat between the teams then even saw Jonny Bairstow getting involved during England’s second innings. The batter was seen having a verbal spat with Shubman Gill about the same and the clip of that incident did rounds on the internet.
Days later after the India vs England Test series was over, James Anderson revealed his spat with Shubman Gill. He revealed that he told the Indian batter about him getting runs only in India, replying to which the batter told him to retire. Speaking on the BBC Tailenders podcast, he explained:
“I said something to him like, ‘Do you get any runs outside India?’ and he said, ‘It’s time to retire. Then two balls later, I got him out.”
I’m definitely in the best shape I’ve ever been in – James Anderson
James Anderson also expressed his delight to play for England in the upcoming season. He said that he wants to earn his place in the team and he’s in the best shape. He added that his place in the team is not given as he needs to work hard to prove his worth. He added:
“I’m really excited for the summer. I want to make sure I’m playing well and earn my place in the team. I’m not getting any worse. I’m definitely in the best shape I’ve ever been in. I like where my game is at, and I still have that enjoyment of turning up every day and trying to get better in the nets. My place in the team is not a given so I’ve got to work hard to prove I’m worth a place in the summer.”
The upcoming England summer will be a great opportunity for James Anderson to go past Shane Warne’s tally of 708 Test wickets. If he achieves the feat he will become the second-highest wicket-taker in Tests, only behind Muthiah Muralidharan (800). It remains to be seen how many wickets will he get next summer.
