India’s former T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav revealed that he is working towards a return to the national team after a dramatic fall. Suryakumar Yadav attended the final day of the Pro Govinda League Season 4, where he made it clear that he has not given up on his India career.

The BCCI, chief selector Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir decided to start a new cycle under the fresh leadership and handed the captaincy to Shreyas Iyer, dropping the former India captain entirely from the Indian setup. He was already playing only T20Is for the side.
Suryakumar’s poor batting form played a key role in the tough decision. His T20I average dropped below 26, and sometimes it dropped to 12.84. The right-handed batter also failed miserably in the IPL 2026 as well with the Mumbai Indians. He scored just 270 runs in 13 matches at an average of 20.76.
There have also been concerns about a wrist injury affecting his trademark 360-degree batting style. However, Suryakumar’s India career is not completely over. The selectors have reportedly kept the door open, but the 35-year-old will need to score runs consistently in domestic cricket to force his way back into contention.
Suryakumar Yadav eyes India return as he continues hard work
Well, SKY is already focused on forcing his way back into the Indian team. The former Indian skipper has made it clear that he is continuing his hard work and hoping things fall in his favour. He also said that he is supporting the Mumbai team in the Pro Govinda League.

Wasim Jaffer questions Gautam Gambhir’s treatment of Suryakumar Yadav and Mohammed Shami
Meanwhile, former India batter Wasim Jaffer has criticised Gautam Gambhir’s handling of Suryakumar Yadav and Mohammed Shami. He questioned Suryakumar’s removal as T20I captain and his exclusion despite leading India to the T20 World Cup title.
Jaffer also raised concerns over Shami’s continuous omission from the Indian team despite his consistent performance in domestic cricket. Shami has not played for India for nearly 18 months, while Suryakumar has been out for around six months.
Wasim Jaffer said in a video on his YouTube channel: “Some individuals could have gotten better treatment, like Surya (Suryakumar Yadav), who was axed after winning the T20 World Cup. There are other players as well, like Shami. Some things could have been better. But otherwise, I don't think in white-ball cricket any blame can be put on him.”
He also said India’s Test whitewashes at home against New Zealand and South Africa will remain a permanent negative mark on Gambhir’s coaching record despite his white-ball success.
