'Don't know why we talk about Virat Kohli' - Wasim Jaffer on batter's T20 approach

Former India cricketer Wasim Jaffer expressed his anger over the talks related to Virat Kohli’s T20 approach. He said that he is tired of all the chatter about the strike rate and approach of the modern great, who has proved his worth again and again.

There have been lots of talks about the place of Virat Kohli in the Indian T20 team. With the T20 World Cup 2024 around the corner, the batter’s place in the team has been the most talked about thing in Indian cricket. There’s no certainty if he will make it into the team or not.

There were some reports which suggested that BCCI isn’t keen to take Virat Kohli to the USA and Caribbean for the T20 World Cup 2024. This is because they feel that his slow approach and low strike rate won’t be suitable on Carribean pitches.

Virat Kohli missed T20I cricket for India after the T20 World Cup 2022. He wasn’t in the scheme of things as a lot of youngsters were given opportunities. However, he made a comeback in the T20I series against Afghanistan, which took place in January this season.

The batter didn’t have the kind of outing that he would’ve wanted as he didn’t score big in the two games that he played. Virat Kohli is now part of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. He didn’t great outing in the first game.

Virat Kohli scored 21 runs off 20 balls in the game against Chennai Super Kings (CSK). The batter, however, will be having another opportunity today (25th March) to prove his worth again. Royal Challengers Bengaluru will be taking on Punjab Kings at M Chinnaswamy Stadium.

The ongoing IPL 2024 will be extremely vital for Virat Kohli in the context of T20 World Cup selection. With all the talks about his place in the Indian team, the batter will be keen to make an impact and stake his claim back in the team for the upcoming mega event in the USA and the Caribbean.

Wasim Jaffer in an interaction with ESPNCricinfo, lashed out at the criticism of Virat Kohli. He highlighted his average and strike, saying that he doesn’t understand why people talk about someone, who is modern great. He explained:

“He only faced 6 balls in the powerplay against Chennai Super Kings. Generally, he goes really hard in the powerplay, that’s been his pattern and then he slows down a little bit when the spin is on. I think he will play the way he played last season.

“You talked about how he had a strike rate of 140, in his career he is averaging 50+ and T20Is and franchise cricket and strike rate of 140. I don’t know why we talk so much about him. Someone who is modern great and he has done time and time again in situations. Even in the last T20 World Cup, he averaged 90+ and had a strike rate of 140.”
