Virat Kohli’s resurgence at the top has started making headlines. The right-handed batter smashed his 71st International century and looked in sublime touch throughout the Asia Cup 2022. There have been talks going on that Virat should open for India which may sound a bit odd as he is someone who can provide stability in the middle phase of the innings.

There is no doubt that Virat has a prolific record at the top for India and he can be used as a secret weapon, but in a marquee, tournament-making chances at the 11th hour is not a feasible option.

Much to the delight of the ardent fans, the former skipper has started coming back to his old form.

Gautam Gambhir on Virat Kohli

Gautam Gambhir was seen having interaction with Star Sports on the episode of ‘Game Plan’ and was asked about Virat’s batting position.

Don’t start this nonsense about him (Kohli) opening the batting. He can’t open the batting with KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma (available).

“I even said this on air that there shouldn’t even be a debate about this. I will always be flexible about No. 3. If the openers bat out 10 overs, then I will have Suryakumar Yadav at No.3. If an early wicket falls then Kohli.”

Conundrum for Management

KL Rahul hasn’t shown any encouraging signs apart from his half century against Afghanistan in the recently concluded Asia Cup 2022.

The batter was in two minds whether to attack or defend due to which there was more pressure on the Captain Rohit Sharma. The management would be aware of KL Rahul’s form which can hamper team’s chance in ICC T20 World Cup 2022.

The problem with Virat Kohli opening the batting is that if he gets out cheaply then there is no one who provides stability in the middle overs.

Moreover, captain Rohit Sharma would be aware that the team has a very bad habit of falling like a pack of cards. It would be interesting to see what decision the management takes as it looks unlikely that Virat Kohli will open.
