Former New Zealand pacer and popular commentator Danny Morrison has raised tough questions about Chennai Super Kings’ struggling campaign in the ongoing IPL 2025. With five defeats in six matches in the ongoing IPL 2025, Danny Morrison hinted that Chennai Super Kings might be holding on too long to its veteran stars, and it’s starting to show.
Morrison openly questioned whether CSK’s long-standing love for their seasoned players like MS Dhoni, often nicknamed “Dad’s Army,” is now hurting them. The cricket pundit has pointed out names like Ravichandran Ashwin, who retired from international cricket earlier this year, and wondered how driven these players still are in such a fast and ruthless format of the game.
Danny Morrison slams Chennai Super Kings' 'love affair with aging players' in the IPL 2025
Danny Morrison said in ESPNCricinfo: “Is there too much of a love affair with those guys that have been there a long time? And I know there's the nickname of Dad's Army, and we had that. But how motivated are they? Some guys, R. Ashwin, he's finished internationally. All of those sorts of things where you still should have a bit to offer. Totally.”
Morrison further mentioned that Ashwin is a spinner, and everybody is well aware of how long he and other seniors can last for Chennai Super Kings. But the commentator said that the real question is how really motivated he is to keep doing it, given that he is a Test player who finished his career in Australia earlier this year and probably didn't finish how he'd like.

The cricket pundit further noted, “So, then we're going to ask those questions because, you know, opinionated and want to ask why is it not going well?” Ashwin has so far managed only five wickets in 6 games so far in the ongoing IPL 2025 for the five-time champions.
The former New Zealand cricketer has stressed that cricket at the highest level is unforgiving, saying if motivation and sharpness dip, the game has a brutal way of exposing weaknesses, and that’s something happening with the Chennai Super Kings in the ongoing IPL 2025.
Morrison feels CSK is at risk of being left behind if they don’t rethink their loyalty to aging stars like MS Dhoni and Ravichandran Ashwin and bring fresh energy into the side. The New Zealander feels there is a lack of motivation in the current Chennai Super Kings squad, and that’s hurting them this season.

'Don't take the piss out of cricket, because it'll take the piss out of you'
The commentator further explained, “So, from those emotive-type things, I wonder, because you've asked that question, and I think a lot of those guys, you're hanging on a bit too long. Really, how motivated are you? You love what you do. Sure, you do.”
Morrison signed off by saying, “But there comes a time, international sport, anything, and you play at the top, it's ruthless. It'll come back and bite you. There's a lovely saying, don't take, excuse me, don't take the piss out of cricket, because it'll take the piss out of you. It'll come back and bite you badly.”
