Glenn Maxwell starred for Australia in the recently-concluded ICC World Cup 2023. He played a big role in Australia’s triumphant campaign.

He finished the World Cup as Australia’s third highest run-scorer in the competition. The right-handed batsman smashed 400 runs in 9 games at a stunning strike-rate of 150 and an average of over 66. More than the runs, he will be remembered for playing two of the all-time great ODI knocks in the competition,

The allrounder did not begin the competition on a good note as he struggled for runs. He registered scores of 12, 3, 31* and 0 in the first four games before bouncing back with a historic knock against the Netherlands. Glenn Maxwell smashed a 40-ball century against the Netherlands to register the fastest century in the history of the World Cup.

However, his best was yet to come. Australia were reeling at 91 for 7 while chasing 292 against Afghanistan and not many were expecting what was to unfold as Glenn Maxwell played arguably the greatest ODI knock of all time to power his team to a miraculous win. He smashed an unbeaten 201 runs to clinch victory from the jaws of defeat for his side.

Glenn Maxwell was recently asked to pick his best knock from ICC World Cup 2023 and while many would have expected him to pick his double century against Afghanistan, the Australia star came up with a different answer. He picked scoring the winning runs in the World Cup final over the double century.

Australia needed only 2 runs to win the final when Travis Head was dismissed and Glenn Maxwell came out to bat. He took a double on the very first ball he faced to finish the game.

“The two runs in the final were pretty cool. I don’t think anything’s going to top that. Even though there were moments during the tournament individually, I think that final … nothing’s going to top that,” said Glenn Maxwell.

The allrounder is not new to hitting the winning runs in a World Cup final. He had done the same in 2021 too when Australia defeated New Zealand in the final of the ICC T20 World Cup in UAE.
