The 22-year-old Afghanistan National Cricket Team spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman uprooted the stumps of the 32-year-old England National Cricket Team batsman Joe Root in the 13th match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Sunday, October 15.

Chasing a modest total of 285 runs in the match, England were off to a poor start as they lost Jonny Bairstow in the second over itself. Then, Joe Root also fell in the 7th over to leave England in a spot of bother.

On the 5th ball of the 7th over, Mujeeb Ur Rahman bowled a fullish length delivery that pitched on the off-stump and it kept moving in with the angle. Joe Root went back and ended up playing down the wrong line. The ball kept low, snuck past the inside edge, and crashed into his off-stump.

Joe Root scored 11 runs off 17 balls, with 2 fours, before walking back to the hut. Overall, Joe Root has got awful numbers while batting in overs 1-10 in ODIs since 2020. He has scored 45 runs in 15 innings at an average of 5.62 and a strike rate of 39.13 while getting dismissed 8 times.

Speaking during the mid-innings break, Liam Livingstone, who shined with the ball, said that they decided to bowl first in the match keeping in mind the dew factor in the second innings. He said:

“Looked like a good pitch first up. I think the reason we bowled first was hoping the dew comes in and makes it a bit better second time out. It was a bit harder against spin but it was a good pitch overall.”

He added that he enjoys bowling and was satisfied with his performance against Afghanistan. He said:

“I tried to bring the stumps into play as much as I could and it came off well. It is something which I really worked on. Being the sixth bowler, you don’t always get to bowl. Sometimes I’m not needed and sometimes I’m thrown into the deep end like today. It’s something I pride on.

“Thankfully it came out well today. I work hard, making sure the leg spinners come out really well. I try to work on my off-spin whenever I can, it doesn’t come as naturally but I enjoy bowling.”
