Former Australian head coach Justin Langer said that England proved that the ‘Bazball’ approach can be worked against quality bowling attacks like Australia. Justin Langer admitted that England batters tried to put extra pressure on Australia bowlers in the fourth Test of the Ashes 2023 series.
The Ben Stokes-led team put up a mammoth total of 592 runs in 107.4 overs in their first innings at Old Trafford in Manchester. The English bowlers picked up five wickets in Australia’s second innings on Day 4. However, the rain played spoilsport on the final day, and the match ended in a draw.
Absolutely Breath-Taking To Watch – Justin Langer
In his column for The Telegraph, Justin Langer lauded England’s “Bazball” approach, describing it as some of the most awe-inspiring cricket he has seen for a very long time.
“England might not have won the Ashes this time but, on the second afternoon of the fourth Test I finally understood what they were doing and why they were doing it. That was some of the most awe-inspiring cricket I have seen for a very long time.
“It was absolutely breath-taking to watch, and proved to me that this style of play could work against the best bowling attack in the world,” he added.
Australia scored 214 runs for the loss of five wickets before the entire Day 5 was washed out due to rain. The Pat Cummins-led team retained the Ashes series as they cannot lose the series from here.
They Executed Their Plan To Perfection – Justin Langer
The former Australian opener stated that England batters executed their plans well and were ruthless against Australian bowlers in the match.
“They executed their plan to perfection for three days, before being defied by the rain. They have a strategy and a blueprint, and showed how ruthless they can be for long periods, and that it works against the very best teams, even the World Test Champions,” he added.
The Pat Cummins-led team will take on the Ben Stokes-led team in the final Test of the five-match series at the Oval in London starting on Thursday, July 27.
