Former England captain Michael Vaughan stated that the Ben Stokes-led team’s aggressive style of play, “Bazball,” put more pressure on Australia in the Ashes series. Michael Vaughan feels that Australia overlooked their own abilities as they were more worried about England’s approach.

Australia were in a comfortable position with a 2-0 lead after the first two games. However, England bounced back and dominated in the three remaining Tests, coming close to winning the series. The hosts missed the chance to secure the series as the fourth Test ended in a draw due to rain.

They’re Almost Scared Of Them – Michael Vaughan

In his column for the Telegraph, Michael Vaughan wrote that the series ended in a 2-2 draw, but more questions were raised about Pat Cummins’ captaincy.

“This Ashes has ended up as a 2-2 draw, but of the two captains there are going to be far more questions about Pat Cummins’ method than Stokes’.

Meanwhile Cummins and Australia have sent a message to England that they’re almost scared of them. They’ve been so, so worried about what England can do that at times they’ve forgotten about their own strengths.”

The Pat Cummins-led team beat India in the World Test Championship (WTC) final before the Ashes series. However, Cummins’ captaincy came under fire for his defensive approach, especially in the fourth Ashes Test.

Cummins Goes Home With More Questions – Michael Vaughan

The cricketer-turned-commentator highlighted that England played in an aggressive style, similar to the mighty Australian team of the past.

“So even though they won the World Test Championship final against India and leave England with the urn retained, Cummins goes home with more questions than answers.

This summer England have played in that Australian way. And Australia have been left looking like England in the 1990s: too attritional and fearful. England have done to Australia what Australia have done to them many times before.”

Australia kick-started their WTC 2023-2025 cycle with a drawn series in away conditions. The Aussie team will play their next red-ball game against Pakistan at home after the 2023 ODI World Cup.
