The fifth and final Test of the Ashes series between England and Australia is evenly poised, with both sides having a chance to win. Veteran Indian wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik playfully teased his fellow commentators, Mark Taylor and Ricky Ponting, by reminiscing about the thrilling 2009 Ashes series.

During the final Test of the 2009 Ashes series, England set a target of 546 for the Australian team. Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey added a solid partnership of 127 runs off 239 balls, but it ended due to a brilliant throw from Andrew Flintoff. Australia lost the Test by 197 runs, resulting in a 2-1 series defeat.

They Lost The Test And The Ashes Post That – Dinesh Karthik

During the commentary on Day 4 of the ongoing Test, Dinesh Karthik stated that Ricky Ponting should explain what happened after his wicket in the 2009 Ashes finale.

“The two Australian commentators here going gaga over how well Australia are going. Here is a moment though, that happened a few Ashes ago.

Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey had put on a partnership of 127 before this happened. What happened after that, I think it is best Ricky explains. They lost the Test and the Ashes post that,” said Karthik.

The Ben Stokes-led team set a challenging target of 384 runs for Australia in the final inning. In response, David Warner (58) and Usman Khawaja (69) formed an unbeaten 135-run opening partnership. England bowlers failed to pick up a wicket in 38 overs of play on Day 4.

He Has A Contract Next Year – Ricky Ponting

Ricky Ponting teased back at Dinesh Karthik and said that he secured a contract for the next year with his comments in the Sky box.

“Gee have a bit of that, there you go. Dinesh Karthik’s become an honorary Englishman overnight hasn’t he?” said Taylor.

“Just making sure he has a contract next year, isn’t he? Locking himself in in the Sky box. Good work DK,” Ponting then said.

England need to take all 10 wickets to secure a win, while the Pat Cummins-led team needs 249 runs for a historic run-chase victory. Australia will be hoping to secure their first Test series win on English soil since 2001.
