England has announced the playing XI which will take on visitors India in the 1st Test of the five-match series at Edgbaston in Birmingham on August 1 (Wednesday). Three Lions’ skipper, Joe Root picked his playing XI in order to get things underway for the much-awaited competition. This would be England’s 1000th Test match.
Adil Rashid finds his name in the 1st Test:
Leg-spinner Adil Rashid is the sole spinner to earn his place in the first Test. After a superlative performance in the limited-overs game, he got drafted in the squad to battle against India. It will be 11th appearance for Rashid and first on the English shores.
Rashid had signed a white-ball contract with English County club Yorkshire. However, he did not feature for them in a single Test almost from two years now. In 2016, Rashid played his last Test under the leadership of Alastair Cook in Chennai.
The inclusion of Sam Curran:
Sam Curran of Surrey gets his second appearance. He got a chance ahead of Jamie Porter, who belongs to Essex. Curran got a nod due to his left-arm angle preferred and batting aptitude.
He got a place ahead of batting all-rounder Moeen Ali, who misses out despite some good shows in his bag.
Ben Stokes find his name in the playing XI:
However, he will miss his second Test match at Lord’s due to his trial over a Bristol nightclub incident in September 2017. The trial will begin on Monday (6th August).
Butter to be new vice-captain:
Apart from Joe Root, who will lead his team, Jos Buttler will be acting as his deputy. Recently, Buttler has been in the form of his life.
Both James Anderson and Stuart Broad will kick off the proceeding with the ball in Birmingham.
“I think there have already been small conversations saying about ‘don’t be disheartened if you are left out for a Test match,’ it’s not a personal attack or dropping, it’s management of your bowlers to make sure we give ourselves the best chance,” Broad said.
England XI for the 1st Test: Joe Root (capt), James Anderson, Jonny Bairstow (wk), Stuart Broad, Jos Buttler, Alastair Cook, Sam Curran, Keaton Jennings, Dawid Malan, Adil Rashid, and Ben Stokes.
