ENG vs IRE: Ollie Pope Breaks Ian Botham's Record for Fastest Test Double Hundred On English Soil

England batter Ollie Pope achieved a massive milestone on Day 2 of a one-off Test match against Ireland at the Lord’s Cricket Ground on Friday, June 2. Ollie Pope set a record for the fastest Test double hundred on English soil, surpassing legendary all-rounder Ian Botham’s record.

The England vice-captain reached his maiden double hundred in just 207 balls. The right-handed batter reached a landmark with a six in the 83rd over of England’s first innings. However, he got out on the very next delivery of Andy McBrine’s bowling as England declared at 524/4.

Ollie Pope recorded the 7th-fastest double century in Test cricket and the second-fastest by an England batter in Red-ball cricket. England Test skipper Ben Stokes holds the record for the fastest double hundred in 163 balls. Stokes achieved the feat in a Test match against South Africa in Cape Town in 2016.

On the other hand, England opener Ben Duckett had the chance to score the fastest hundred in England. However, the left-handed batter was dismissed for 182 runs off 178 balls, including 24 fours and a six. Pope and Duckett added a 252-run partnership for the second wicket in England’s first innings.

Joe Root Becomes Second England Batter To Score 11000 Test Runs

Earlier, the Ben Stokes-led team bundled out the opposition for 172 runs after winning the toss. Veteran pacer Stuart Broad ran through Ireland’s batting line-up as he picked up five wickets for just 51 runs. Jack Leach grabbed three wickets, while Matthew Potts took two wickets in Ireland’s first innings.

In response, England put up a mammoth total of 524 runs. Former captain Joe Root scored 56 runs off 59 balls with the help of four boundaries and a six. Joe Root became the second England batter to complete 11,000 runs in Test cricket. Former opener Alastair Cook was the first batter to achieve the feat.
