ENG vs NZ: Obviously Disappointing But I Feel I Have Contributed To The Team - Jamie Overton On Missing Maiden Test Century

England all-rounder Jamie Overton rued missing century on Test debut against New Zealand on the third day of the second Test at the Headingley.

Overton had revived England’s innings in the course of his 241-run partnership with Jonny Bairstow for the seventh wicket. The duo lifted the hosts’ spirit after they were tattered at 55 for six at one stage on Day 2.

Overton walked in to bat on the third day with an overnight score of 89 and in search of his maiden Test ton. Overton drove Trent Boult in front of the square for a boundary to move to 96.

In the next over, the New Zealand pacer induced the edge of Overton’s bat and Daryl Mitchell took a low catch at the first slip. Boult not only broke the brilliant stand between Bairstow and Overton but also ended the debutant’s chances to score his maiden Test hundred.

The 28-year-old Overton admitted he was nervous in the nineties and played a false shot and expressed disappointment for the same.

“I was tossing and turning for quite a lot. I’m always going to be a little bit nervous but I felt like I was in sort of in a great place this morning and just didn’t quite get over the line. The ball was there to hit and I just hit it to the wrong place,” Overton said after the third day’s play.

“Obviously I was very disappointed getting out on 97. But me and Jonny put us in a great position [a partnership of 241 – a new record for the seventh wicket]. And that knock from Broady (42) coming in and getting us into a lead has put us in a great place going into the second innings. It was obviously disappointing but I feel I’ve contributed to the team more than enough,” he added.

England took a slender lead of 31 runs in the first innings and reduced the Black Caps to 168 for five at the close of the day.

Overton ended New Zealand opener Tom Latham’s relentless efforts (76) as the visitors walked with a lead of 137 with Daryl Mitchell (4) and Tom Blundell (5) batting for them.
