Trent Boult, on Wednesday (September 13), once again starred with the ball to fire a timely reminder to all the teams ahead of the upcoming ICC World Cup. The left-arm bowler, who decided against accepting a central contract from New Zealand, returned to the ODI team after almost a year.

Before playing in the ongoing series against England, Trent Boult had last played an ODI for New Zealand in September last year. And the New Zealand star has hit the ground running. He did not play the first match before blowing England’s top order away in the second game.

Trent Boult dismissed Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root, and Ben Stokes inside 5 overs to leave England reeling at 8 for 3. New Zealand, however, could not win the game and lost it by 79 runs while chasing 227. And on Wednesday, Trent Boult was at his devastating best once again.

After New Zealand won the toss and elected to bowl first, he justified the decision by dismissing Bairstow (0) and Root (4) cheaply. The star pacer then returned to break the 199-run stand between Dawid Malan and Stokes by dismissing the former for 96. Towards the end of the innings, he picked up two more wickets to complete a five-wicket haul.

He finished the innings with figures of 5/51 from 9.1 overs. New Zealand, however, once again ended up on the losing side. After a stunning 182-run knock from Stokes guided the hosts to a big total of 368 runs, the tourists were all out for 187.

Trent Boult creates history:

While Trent Boult’s spell could not guide New Zealand to a win, it has helped him create history. He now holds the record for most five-wicket hauls by a New Zealand cricketer in ODIs. The record was previously held by legendary allrounder Richard Hadlee.

Trent Boult has a total of six five-wicket hauls for the Black Caps in ODIs while Hadlee ended his illustrious career with five five-wicket hauls. Among active cricketers, only Mitchell Starc has more five-wicket hauls than him in the 50-over format. The overall record is held by Pakistan’s Waqar Younis who picked up 13 fifers in ODIs.
