Harry Brook made a blistering and promising start to his first-ever World Cup innings but failed to capitalize on it. The right-handed batsman was not named in England’s preliminary World Cup squad.

However, a string of impressive performances saw him make it to the squad at the expense of veteran opener Jason Roy. Brook got a chance in England’s playing eleven for the ongoing World Cup opener against New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Not many were expecting the hard-hitting batsman to be a part of England’s playing eleven for the first game. However, an unfortunate injury to Ben Stokes saw Harry Brook get the opportunity to make his World Cup debut. England were in a precarious position when Harry Brook walked out to bat.

The reigning champions had lost the wickets of both of their openers for just 64 runs. The pressure, however, did not make much of a difference for Harry Brook. Known for his aggressive batting style, he started his innings in his typical style.

Ben Stokes reacts to Harry Brook’s dismissal:

Harry Brook raced away to 25 runs off just 15 balls with the help of 4 fours and a six. But before he could capitalize on the good start, he miscued a short ball from Rachin Ravindra towards deep mid-wicket where Daryl Mitchell took a simple catch.

And as soon as Mitchell completed the catch, the cameras turned towards the English dugout where Ben Stokes’ reaction caught everyone’s attention. The England Test captain, who is competing for a spot in the playing eleven with Brook, looked dejected after the dismissal as his side lost the third wicket.

Watch:

Meanwhile, Moeen Ali also failed to do well with the bat and departed after scoring just 11 runs. At the time of writing this report, England were on 139 for 4 in the 27th over.
