New Zealand’s decision to bowl first in the first game of the ICC World Cup 2023 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad has paid off. The Kiwis have displayed a sensational effort and have put the defending champions under tremendous pressure.

New Zealand picked four quick wickets and one went to part-timer Glenn Phillips, who removed Moeen Ali with a peach of a delivery. The English all-rounder had no clue as the ball went through to him and went on to clatter the stumps.

Glenn Phillips bowled a slight short ball that was on off-stump. The ball had a hint of spin in it and Moeen Ali misjudged it and rocked back in the crease to pull it away. However, he played the wrong line, missed the ball completely, and saw his stumps getting shattered.

New Zealand spinners have bowled exceptionally well and have put their team on the front foot. Rachin Ravindra, Mitchell Santner, and Glenn Phillips all have chipped in to remove 4 wickets of England in no time. With the scalp of Moeen Ali, the defending champions were reduced to 118/4.

Earlier England had a fiery start with the bat as Jonny Bairstow (33) took attack to the New Zealand pacers and smashed them all over the park. However, he along with Dawid Malan (14) couldn’t carry on the start that they got as they lost their wickets early.

Harry Brook (25) played some brutal strokes but he got carried away and ended up throwing his wicket away. The onus now will be on skipper Jos Buttler and Joe Rooe to take their team to the fighting total.
