Jos Buttler led England to an impressive win over New Zealand in the first T20I on Wednesday (August 30). But more than leading the team to the win, the England skipper has been garnering attention for submitting a review that many are calling one of the worst reviews of all time.
In what remained a one-sided contest for the majority of the game, England inflicted a heavy seven-wicket defeat on the Black Caps to take the lead in the three-match series. Asked to bat first, New Zealand made a positive start as opener Finn Allen smashed Luke Wood for three consecutive sixes in the very first over.
However, the visitors could not build on the momentum and eventually finished on a modest 139 for 9 in the allotted 20 overs. Glenn Phillips was the top scorer for New Zealand, scoring 41 off 38 balls. For England, Luke Wood and Brydon Carse picked up three wickets apiece.
In reply, England chased down the total in just 14 overs and lost three wickets. Dawid Malan top-scored for the hosts, scoring 54 runs off 42 balls while Harry Brook played an unbeaten knock of 43 from 27 balls.
Jos Buttler submits one of the worst reviews of all time:
Talking about Jos Buttler’s shocking review call, it took place in the sixteenth over when Liam Livingstone was bowling to Phillips. The part-time spinner bowled a yorker length delivery to the New Zealand batter and the latter leaned forward to defend the ball.
And to everyone’s surprise, Jos Buttler decided to go upstairs. The England captain was convinced that the ball had hit Phillips on the pad or shoe only to be left red-faced by the replays. The replays showed that Phillips had middled the ball and his shoe or pad was not even close to the ball.
“That is one of the all-time terrible reviews,” said Henry Moeran on BBC Test Match Special commentary.
