Is there anything that Sam Curran cannot do on a cricket field? Well, after looking at what he did while fielding during the first T20I between England and New Zealand on Wednesday (August 30), not many would bet against him.
One of the leading allrounders in the world, Sam Curran took a stunning catch to send back the dangerous Glenn Phillips at a crucial juncture of the match. With New Zealand losing wickets at regular intervals at one end, it was Glenn Phillips who stood firm at the other. The Black Caps were reeling at 31 for 2 when he walked out to bat and soon found his team reduced to 35 for 3 inside the powerplay.
The likes of Mark Chapman (11) and Daryl Mitchell (7) also failed to get going as New Zealand lost half of their ten wickets for just 75 runs. Phillips then helped his side cross the 100-run mark but before he could take them to a big total, his fighting knock came to an end courtesy of Sam Curran’s stunning catch.
The hard-hitting batsman was batting on 41 runs and would have loved to shift gears in the final overs before being sent back in the 17th over. On the third ball of the over, he made a decent connection with Luke Wood’s slower delivery. The ball was traveling really fast and the sideway movement only made things tougher for Sam Curran at long-off. However, the England star did really well to complete a spectacular catch while diving towards his left.

England thrash New Zealand:
Talking about the game, England thrashed New Zealand by seven wickets in the first T20I to take the lead in the four-match series. Asked to bat first, New Zealand managed a modest total of 139 for 9 in the allotted 20 overs. Phillips was the highest scorer for the visitors, scoring 41 off 38 balls with the help of 4 fours.
In reply, England chased down the total with utmost ease in just 14 overs and lost only 3 wickets. After Jonny Bairstow departed in the first over, a 57-run stand between Will Jacks and Dawid Malan steadied the ship for the hosts. Malan went on to complete his fifty and scored 54 off 42 balls. Harry Brook then struck an unbeaten 27-ball 43 to take England home.
