Senior England pacer Stuart Broad said that England aren’t out of the Lord’s Test and still hold the chance of making a statement in the last three days.
South Africa ended the second day with a lead of 124 runs by the collective efforts of top and lower middle order batters as the Proteas finished at 289 for seven.
Earlier in the day, England were bowled out for a paltry 165 as South Africa bowling spearhead Kagiso Rabada claimed 5/52, his 12th Test five-wicket haul and first at Lord’s.
South Africa continue the brilliance with bat after routing England with ball
South Africa openers Dean Elgar and Sarel Erwee banked on the opportunity set by the bowlers. The pair played its shots targeting Matty Potts and Stuart Broad, while respecting the good deliveries of James Anderson.
Anderson got the much-needed breakthrough for England after he sent Elgar with the ball ricocheting the batter’s body before clipping the bails in a bizarre dismissal.
England skipper Ben Stokes chipped in with regular wickets to finish the day at 3/53. Stokes got the wickets of Erwee, Rassie van der Dussen and Keshav Maharaj.
Broad dismissed South Africa wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne for 11 to complete his 100th Test wicket at Lord’s. He joined teammate and best friend James Anderson to achieve the massive feat at the Home of Cricket.
Marco Jansen Marco Jansen (41 not out) and Maharaj (41) built a strong partnership worth 72 runs to ensure the visitors walked off the field with tag of favourites to win this Test.
We have got ourselves back in the game: Stuart Broad
Broad feels the game is poised for both teams and they can pull back a chance of coming black in the game.
“The game is set up really nicely. We feel really positive in the changing room that we have got ourselves back in the game. We feel like tomorrow is a must-win day,” Broad was quoted as saying by The Guardian.
“When you get bowled out relatively cheaply in the first innings, you have to make it a first versus fourth innings game, so we have to try to get enough ahead that we can try to defend it,” Broad added.
Jansen will resume the third day in the company of South Africa bowling spearhead Kagiso Rabada.
