With cricket all set to return to the Olympics in 2028 after more than a century, exciting plans are already in motion, and England and Scotland are leading the way.

Days after it was announced that both men's and women's cricket would feature six teams each at the Los Angeles Olympics 2028, discussions have begun between the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and Cricket Scotland.

ECB and Cricket Scotland are working together to create Great Britain cricket teams that can take part in the Olympic Games 2028. Notably, the last time cricket featured in the Olympics was in 1900 in Paris, where Great Britain won the final.

England and Scotland collaborate on Team GB for the Los Angeles Olympics 2028

Now, over a hundred years later, England and Scotland are working on the same idea to repeat that success in the 2028 Olympic Games. Notably, cricket competitions at LA 2028 will be played in Pomona, USA.

Cricket Scotland's Chief Executive Officer, Trudy Lindblade, revealed that they share a strong relationship with the ECB and they are in talks to set up a Team GB cricket team, which is required by the British Olympic Association (BOA), to compete in the Los Angeles Olympics 2028.

Trudy Lindblade was quoted as saying by BBC Radio 4, “We have a really good working relationship with the ECB, so we have been in talks with them, and [we’re] in the process of establishing a Team GB cricket entity. That’s what’s required by the British Olympic Association (BOA) for a British team to compete at the Olympic Games.”

IOC to announce qualification process for cricket teams soon

According to the schedule confirmed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), cricket will return to the Olympics in 2028 at the Los Angeles Games, with both men’s and women’s events to be played as six-team T20 tournaments.

In the International Cricket Council (ICC) events like the T20 World Cup or the ODI World Cup, England and Scotland usually compete as separate teams if they qualify. However, for the Olympics, the rules are different.

According to the IOC, each participating country can have a squad of 15 players for both the men’s and women’s tournaments. The qualification process for these six teams has not been decided yet, with the IOC expected to announce the details later.

We would have an opportunity through the GB concept: Cricket Scotland

Lindblade signed off by saying, “So, it’s really interesting, the six teams for us, we would have an opportunity through the GB concept. There’s a lot to come in terms of how qualification takes place, not just for those six teams but also how—if a GB team were to qualify—we have selection within that. So, exciting times, and we’ll continue to liaise with the ECB and our colleagues at LA 2028 and ICC. It will be interesting.”

The LA28 organizing committee stated earlier this week, “Cricket (T20) is a hugely popular global sport and will be included in the LA28 Games. A temporary venue will be built at the Pomona Fairplex to host the cricket matches.”
