England’s ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign ended in complete humiliation, as they crashed out of the tournament without a single win. England’s disastrous performance has left fans and experts stunned, but the criticism isn’t just about their on-field struggles; questions are being raised about the team’s mentality, attitude, and approach.
After their exit, the English media slammed the players’ attitude, claiming there is a deeper cultural issue within the team. The lack of urgency, apathetic body language, and unclear post-match explanations have only fueled the frustration among the fans and former cricketers.
England’s culture and mentality questioned after ICC Champions Trophy 2025 disaster
The England players seemed to be making excuses on the tough questions instead of acknowledging their failures and showing accountability. Now, reacting to these claims, England’s managing director, Rob Key, defended the national team while admitting that their statements have not been good.

Rob Key was quoted as saying by Sky Sports, “I have no issue with the way our guys go about things. But there's no doubt that we've got to get better when we're doing interviews; when players are doing their post-match press conferences, we speak a lot of rubbish a lot of the time.”
Key admitted that the English players have often failed to communicate effectively, which led to unnecessary controversy. He added, “They're trying so hard to not sort of upset players in the dressing room, not try and give away something that they don't think they should, and then they end up creating headlines through that. But I don't kill people for the things they say.”
That's absolutely not true: Rob Key defends England players
Last month, Ben Duckett stated that England didn’t care about the result of the ODI series against India, and they ended up losing all three matches, followed by an embarrassing winless campaign in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
However, the team director dismissed claims that the players lacked commitment or hunger for victory. The former English cricketer has further insisted that the team is working hard, and the arrogance is not the reason behind their struggles on the field.
Key further explained, “There's not a world in which we think the players don't care, that they don't want to go and get big scores, that they don't care about winning, that they're arrogant. That's absolutely not true. Half the time when they're getting themselves into trouble, it's because they're actually trying to concentrate so hard that they end up making mistakes.”
I have no issue with: Rob Key on players' off-field activities on overseas tours
Meanwhile, the English players have often faced criticism for their off-field activities during overseas tours, as they reportedly spend more time on the golf course than in training. However, the team director has dismissed these concerns, saying they remain fully committed to their game.
Key signed off by saying, “A lot gets made of the way they go about things and the way they spend their time when they're not playing, which I have no issue with. When I saw the team in Pakistan, they practiced hard. They got stuck in; it wasn't that they weren't practicing, which was why we didn't perform.”
