Jos Buttler will continue to be the England cricket team captain in the white-ball format, even as the coaching staff undergoes a significant change. The expected departure of England head coach Matthew Mott, likely to be confirmed next week, in the wake of the team’s disappointing results lately.
Mott, who took over as England’s white-ball head coach in May 2022, guided the team to a T20 World Cup title in his home country, Australia, just six months later. However, the England cricket team's performance has declined sharply since their 2022 T20 World Cup triumph.

England managed to win only three out of 12 matches against Test-playing nations in the ODI World Cup 2023 in India and the T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA and West Indies.
England men’s team managing director Rob Key conducted a review of the team’s performance in the past 8-10 months, and it ensured Mott's departure, less than two years into his four-year contract.
According to The Telegraph, the England cricket team is all set for a revamp in limited-overs cricket, with Jos Buttler remaining the captain in the ODI and T20I cricket. The decision will allow Buttler to have a significant role in shaping the future of the white-ball team.
The England captain is expected to favor a new coach with a strong background in international cricket and a deep understanding of white-ball formats. It is also being said that the experience in the Indian Premier League (IPL) could be a key criterion for the new coach for England.
Kumar Sangakkara and Mike Hussey are possible candidates to become England's new white-ball coach
One potential candidate to replace Mott is Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara, who is currently serving as the head coach of Rajasthan Royals (RR), the franchise Buttler represents in the IPL.
Another possible name is former Australian coach and batter Mike Hussey, who served as England consultant during the 2022 T20 World Cup and is now the head coach of Welsh Fire in The Hundred.
Jonathan Trott, who led Afghanistan to the 2024 T20 World Cup semi-finals last month, might be considered for the white-ball coach role if the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) prefers an English coach for the national side.
On the other hand, England’s one of the greatest all-rounders and former captain Andrew Flintoff has also been in the news for replacing Mott. However, The Telegraph report claimed that Flintoff is an unlikely choice at this time to become England’s head coach in limited-overs cricket despite spending time with the team as a consultant.
Andrew Flintoff out of the picture for the top role in the England Cricket Team
Notably, Flintoff is currently serving as the Northern Superchargers head coach in the ongoing The Hundred 2024. The appointment of Mott’s successor could be finalized before England’s limited-overs series against Australia in September, which includes three T20Is and five ODIs.
However, the England cricket team management and ECB are not in a hurry to make the decision regarding the coach, as they are aiming to build up for major upcoming tournaments, including the 2026 T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka and the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe.
