Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) have appointed veteran wicket-keeper batter Litton Das as their new ODI captain. The keeper-batter replaces all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who was previously the captain of the 50-over format. Litton Das has the experience of leading the Bangladesh National Cricket Team in the T20I format, and this will surely help the experienced campaigner.
This is a good decision from the BCB to have one captain for the white-ball formats. It becomes easier to manage the sides, and the strategies also do not change as often. Litton Das will be looking to guide the side well in the 50-over format as the team has done well in the shorter format under his captaincy.
Litton Das to captain Bangladesh till 2027 World Cup
Litton Das will remain the captain for the Bangla Tigers until the 2027 World Cup. This is a huge opportunity for the wicket-keeper batter to lead the side in the major event for the first time in his career. He has previously led the side in this format in 7 games and has 3 wins, 3 losses, and 1 no-result with a winning percentage of 42.85%.
Towhid Hridoy remains as the vice-captain of the ODI team. Nazmul Hossain Shanto will continue as the Test captain. The decision of captaincy comes as a shocker as recently Bangladesh won back-to-back home ODI series against Pakistan and Australia. Previously the Bangla Tigers had three captains for three formats.
Litton Das captaincy record
Das took over the ODI captaincy due to an injury to regular skipper Tamim Iqbal in 2022 season. He led Bangladesh to a memorable 2–1 home series victory against India, winning the first two close matches by 1 wicket and 5 runs before losing the third. However, despite a good result he captained only few matches.
As a captain in 6 innings he has scored 149 runs with a highest of 53 runs, and a decent average of 29.80. He will look to change the scenario of his batting by taking more responsibility as a leader and lead the side with the upfront with the bat.
"We should have two captains"- Tamim Iqbal on two captains policy across formats
During the board of directors meeting current BCB President Tamim Iqbal stated that BCB wanted to have two captains for the three formats and he also has the same reason so they have opted for Litton Das to lead.
While speaking to the media, BCB President Tamim Iqbal said, "I believe we should have two captains, and the board shares the same view."
Under Mehidy Hasan Miraz the side did well at home in recent times winning back-to-back series. However, they managed to win only two of their 13 ODIs away from home under his leadership.
He captained Bangladesh in 24 ODI matches from 2024 to July 2026, securing 10 wins, 13 losses, and 1 tie for a win percentage of 43.75%. But he eventually took over as regular captain in 2025 after Najmul Hossain Shanto was removed as captain despite better results from the team.
