England will be desperate to bounce back when they take on India in the second T20I of the ongoing five-match series. The upcoming game is scheduled to be played on Saturday (January 25) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
The visitors proved no match for the hosts in the series opener as they suffered a heavy 7-wicket loss. The visitors were outplayed by India in all the departments and will have to come up with something special to win the upcoming game.
Asked to bat first, the visitors were all out for just 132 runs even after their captain Jos Buttler's fighting knock of 68 runs. No other visiting batter could provide any resistance with the bat. In reply, India chased down the total inside 13 overs by losing only 3 wickets thanks to Abhishek Sharma's 34-ball 79-run knock.
With the visitors now desperate to bounce back and draw level in the series, we are taking a look at the England Playing 11 for the second T20I.
England Playing 11 vs India - 2nd T20I, England tour of India 2025:
Openers: Ben Duckett, Philip Salt (wk)
Ben Duckett and Phil Salt are expected to retain their spots in the England Playing 11 even after their poor display in the first T20I. Both the openers failed to score big as the guests' innings started on a poor note.
Salt could not even open his account and was dismissed for a duck in the very first over by Arshdeep Singh. On the other hand, Duckett scored 4 runs before being sent back by Arshdeep as well.
Middle-order batsmen and allrounders: Jos Buttler (c), Harry Brook, Liam Livingstone, Jacob Bethell, Jamie Overton
Jos Buttler was the only touring batsman who did well with the bat in the first T20I. The visiting captain led from the front as he waged a lone battle against the reigning world champions. While his teammates departed at regular intervals at one end, he stood firm at the other.
The right-handed batsman scored 68 runs off 44 balls and will be looking to score big in the second game as well. Harry Brook got the start but failed to capitalize on it as he departed for 17. Liam Livingstone could not even open his account while Jacob Bethell scored 7 runs off 14 balls. Jamie Overton scored 2 runs and bowled just one over for 10 runs.
Bowlers: Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood, Saqib Mahmood
After the loss in the first T20I, there is likely to be at least one change to the England Playing 11. Gus Atkinson is likely to make way for Saqib Mahmood in the England Playing 11 for the forthcoming game. Atkinson had a forgettable outing in the first T20I.
He conceded 38 runs in two overs and it would not be surprising if he gets the axe for the second T20I. Mahmood was the visitors' highest wicket-taker during their last T20I assignment which was against West Indies and will be looking to hit the ground running in India.
The other bowlers - Jofra Archer, Mark Wood, and Adil Rashid - are expected to retain their spots in the England Playing 11.
Archer was the pick of the touring bowlers in the first game, taking 2 wickets for just 21 runs in 4 overs, and will be eyeing another good outing. Wood and Rashid, on the other hand, will be looking to bounce back after failing to impress in the series opener.
The visitors are 1-0 down and the Kolkata beating is certain to have an impact on the mentality of the touring party. It will be interesting to see how they bounce back in Chennai.
