Former West Indies captain Brian Lara came up with a hilarious reason for his stunning record with the bat against England. The former batsman is one of the most decorated batsmen of all time.

The West Indies great made his debut in international cricket in 1990 and retired in 2007. He scored a staggering 11,953 runs from 131 Test matches at an average of 52.88, with 34 centuries and 48 half-centuries and a world record score of 400 not out. The legendary batsman also scored over 10000 runs in ODIs with the help of 19 centuries and 63 half-centuries.

While Brian Lara dominated almost all the teams in international cricket, he had a special liking for England. He played 30 Tests against England and scored 2983 runs at an average of over 62. He struck 7 centuries and 11 half-centuries against England. Two of the highest Test scores – 400 and 375 – were also scored by him against the English outfit.

Brian Lara reveals the reason behind his success against England:

Brian Lara recently appeared on a podcast with former cricketers Michael Vaughan and Adam Gilchrist and revealed the reason behind his success. The host of the podcast asked the legendary West Indian: “Playing up against them (Australia and England), who were you more nervous taking on, Australia in its prime or England in its prime?”

In reply, Brian Lara started by saying that the answer to the question is very easy. He stated that he was nervous while facing England in the late 90s when Michael Vaughan was leading the team.

“A very, very easy answer to that. Nervous about taking on England in their prime because they weren’t in their prime for very long and by the time, I got into my career, Australia was already on top of us. It’s not like a fait accompli, but we were always back against the wall against Australia.

“But in England, that late 90s period, getting in the 21st century when they started to get into the top gear with the likes of Vaughany (Michael Vaughan) in charge and Flintoff (Andrew Flintoff),” said Brian Lara.

Vaughan was quick to interrupt as he asked Brian Lara: “Brian, I was gonna ask you that. Your record is incredible. You got 500 playing for Warwickshire. You hit my team for 400. You hit another England team for 375. Was it that you just liked to pick on the England team or was it that we were just sh*t?”

Gilchrist then hilariously interrupted by saying: “Yeah the latter” before Lara left everyone in splits by agreeing with the former Australia wicketkeeper, saying: “I think it’s the latter.”
