England's former interim head coach, Paul Collingwood, hinted at a potential spin-heavy strategy for the defending champions ahead of their crucial ICC T20 World Cup 2024 semifinal clash against India in Guyana on Thursday, June 27.

Analyzing the conditions and the form of England spinners, Collingwood suggested that the defending champions might opt to field four spinners in their lineup, depending on the pitch conditions, in the second semifinal of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 against Team India.

Adil Rashid, in particular, left a huge impression on Collingwood with his sizzling bowling in the tournament, where he scalped nine wickets in seven matches at an economy rate of 6.70. The former England cricketer hinted that the senior leg spinner’s performance would heavily influence England's team selection for the semifinal clash with the Men in Blue.

Apart from Rashid, Collingwood highlighted the versatility within England's spin department, pointing out the options available. Moeen Ali, a seasoned all-rounder, provides both spin bowling and batting depth to the team. Liam Livingstone, known for his leg-spin and off-spin variations, adds further flexibility to England's bowling attack.

Apart from these established spin stars, Collingwood hinted at the potential inclusion of Will Jacks, given his ability to contribute with his off-spin bowling if the pitch conditions favor spin in the match in Guyana. However, he emphasized the importance of adapting to the conditions and selecting a balanced team that can exploit any weaknesses of the Indian team.

The cricket pundit further acknowledged that if the pitch in Guyana is dry, it could prompt England to bolster their spin resources to gain a strategic advantage against India, who are unbeaten in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 so far, having won three group and three super-8 games.

Adil Rashid is on top of his game and this is the beauty of the World Cup: Paul Collingwood

Paul Collingwood said on Star Sports Press Room: “I think Adil Rashid, the way that he is bowling at the moment, we just have to wait and see what the conditions are like. There’s a chance that England could actually go with four spinners themselves. Obviously, Moeen Ali and Liam Livingstone, who is actually an all-rounder who can bowl leg-spin and off-spin. And you never know, if the wickets are so dry, you can go with Will Jacks as well.”

Collingwood added, “I think Adil Rashid is on top of his game and this is the beauty of the World Cup. He is a golden nugget for the England cricket team. When he comes on naturally in the sixth over, I think the one thing about Rashid is, his wrong’s seem to be so difficult to pick. And he's got real good deception. Now in T20 cricket, deception is key.”
