Former International Cricket Council (ICC) elite panel umpire from Pakistan, Asad Rauf, has passed away. Rauf, who was 66-year-old, died due to a cardiac arrest in Lahore.

In the year 2000, Asad Rauf, who was considered one of the finest umpires of his generation, commenced his umpiring career in international cricket and stood in his first ODI.

He was promoted to ICC’s elite panel in the year 2006 just one year after officiating his first Test match and over the course of the next seven years, he became one of the finest umpires from Pakistan.

Talking about his umpiring career, Rauf officiated in 64 Test matches (49 as on-field, 15 as the third umpire), and 139 One Day International games (98 as on-field, 41 as the third umpire). Also, he officiated in 28 T20 International games (23 as on-field, 5 as the third umpire).

Rauf, who was a right-handed batsman, had a solid run in first-class cricket in the 1980s. He played as a middle-order batter for National Bank and Railways. In 71 first-class games, Rauf scored 3423 runs at an average of 28.76, including 3 tons and 22 half-centuries. Also, he played 40 List-A games and scored 611 runs at an average of 19.70, including 4 half-centuries.

On Thursday, September 15 the 40-year-old Pakistan National Cricket Team wicketkeeper-batsman took to Twitter to convey his condolences. He wrote:

“Sad to know about the news of former ICC umpire Asad Rauf’s demise…May Allah grant him magfirat and give his family sabr Ameen.”

Also, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Ramiz Raja tweeted:

“Saddened to hear about passing of Asad Rauf. Not only was he a good umpire but also had a wicked sense of humour. He always put a smile on my face and will continue to do so whenever I think about him. Many sympathies with his family for their loss.”

Talking further about Rauf’s umpiring career, it was ruined by charges of spot-fixing and match-fixing. In 2013 he was named as a “wanted accused” by Mumbai police in their investigation into the spot-fixing scandal that happened in the marquee Indian Premier League (IPL). Meanwhile, in 2016 he received a five-year ban from the BCCI on four charges of corruption and misconduct.
