Team India once again suffered a batting collapse on Day 4 of the first Test of the five-match series against England at Leeds on Monday, June 23. Former Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) director Joy Bhattacharjya made a cheeky remark about India’s recurring struggles with batting collapses in recent times.
Team India posted a total of 364 runs in their second innings following centuries from KL Rahul (137) and Rishabh Pant (118). While chasing a target of 371, England reached 21 without loss after six overs at stumps on Day 4. They need 350 more runs on the final day to secure victory during the series opener.

India started Day 4 of the first Test in Leeds at 90/2 but suffered an early blow with captain Shubman Gill’s dismissal. KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant rebuilt the innings with a 195-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Pant was dismissed after scoring 118 runs off 140 balls, including 15 fours and three sixes.
The Men in Blue resumed the final session at 298/4. However, the visitors were bowled out for 364, losing their last six wickets for just 31 runs. Josh Tongue picked up three wickets in a single over, removing Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Siraj, and Jasprit Bumrah. Ravindra Jadeja remained unbeaten on 25.
This was India’s second batting collapse in the match. Earlier in the first innings, they had lost seven wickets for 41 runs, managing only a six-run lead.

Karun Nair, making his comeback, showed promise with a score of 20 before falling to a return catch. Shardul Thakur was caught at slip after edging one off Josh Tongue. Mohammed Siraj gloved a short ball down the leg side, and Jasprit Bumrah inside-edged an attempted slog.
Prasidh Krishna also departed for a duck after mistiming a big shot off Shoaib Bashir, leaving Ravindra Jadeja unbeaten on 25 as India were bowled out.
India's Batting Collapse in Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 at MCG
India also suffered a collapse in the fourth Test of the 2024–25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the MCG, which proved to be a turning point. Chasing 340 on the final day, India never looked like pushing for a win but were well placed to secure a draw at 121/3 at tea, with Rishabh Pant and Yashasvi Jaiswal set.
However, Pant’s reckless shot after the break, which landed in the hands of a deep fielder, triggered a dramatic collapse. Australia took the remaining seven wickets in just 25 overs to bowl India out for 155. The defeat not only handed the hosts the Test match but also gave them a crucial 2-1 series lead.
