Ex-Singapore cricketer 'brutally murdered' at home amid Indo-Pak conflict Arjun Menon

In what has been a shocking and devastating development, former Singapore Cricketer and coach Arjun Menon was killed in the East African country of Malawi. The incident took place on Saturday (10th May) and sent shockwaves across the area.

Arjun Menon, who was the operations manager of Cricket Malawi since February 2020, was brutally murdered at his residence on May 10. The development was made public by Dr Henry Kamata, chief executive officer of Malawi’s National Council of Sports, on 11th May.

Dr Henry Kamata expressed his grief in a statement. He also called on law enforcement authorities to ensure those responsible are brought to justice for Arjun Menon, whose Cricket journey spanned over four continents.

His life was taken by very dubious people - Singapore Cricket Association president Mahmood Gaznavi on Arjun Menon

SCA president Mahmood Gaznavi was also made aware of the development, and he was left deeply saddened by the incident, saying that his life was taken by dubious people, and he also talked about his love for the game. He said:

"Reports emerging from Malawi seem to indicate that his life was taken by very dubious people. Arjun Menon was a very, very down-to-earth and measured guy who had a lot of love for the game.”

He used his knowledge to advance what he thought was the larger purpose in life - Gaznavi on Arjun Menon

Gaznavi, who last spoke to Menon about three months ago, said that the latter used his knowledge to advance in the game. He also pointed out how he helped people outside of cricket, especially the underprivileged. He said:

"He used his knowledge to advance what he thought was the larger purpose in life, which was to help not just those in cricket, but those outside of cricket, especially the underprivileged."

Arjun Menon started playing cricket during his school days at St Patrick’s School. Playing as a wicketkeeper batter, he then represented Singapore at the youth level. Before making his debut for the National Team in 1886 against the United Arab Emirates at the Asian Cricket Council Trophy.

Menon, who played 5 games for Singapore, had a five-year stint with the SCA from 2015 to 2020. During that period, he took roles such as game development manager and head coach. In 2017, he led the national cricket team to a Twenty20 gold medal at the SEA Games.

His legacy lives on in the players he shaped and the communities he uplifted across continents - SCA

Singapore Cricket Association released the official statement on his feat and said: "His career reflected his unwavering dedication to the development of cricket, both at home and abroad. A passionate ambassador for Singapore cricket, he carried the Singapore flag with pride wherever he coached. And Malawi, where he passed on, was the beneficiary of his cricket contribution.

"His legacy lives on in the players he shaped and the communities he uplifted across continents. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, players, and all who have the honour of knowing him."
