Despite being so dominant in the bilaterals, an ICC trophy is what has been away from the Rohit Sharma-led Indian cricket team. India fell short of ICC titles twice in the year 2023 and have lost 9 knockout games in the last 10 years. The current batch of the Indian cricket team can be termed one of the best sides of the modern-day era, however, at last, the team is always trolled because of ‘choking’ in crucial games.
Indian captain Rohit Sharma while speaking to Jio Cinema during the first IND vs ENG Test match in Hyderabad, stated that the team has done great in the past three years and have won everything other than the ICC trophies. Rohit said that is the one thing the team has not been able to accomplish but he thinks the time for that will also come. Rohit added that the team is focussing on what is going to come next and is not thinking about the past as it cannot be changed.
Rohit Sharma on not being able to win ICC trophies
Rohit Sharma said, “The last three years have been great. Except winning the finals of ICC trophies, we have won everything. That’s one thing we’ve not been able to accomplish, but I think time will come. All we need to do is stay in a good mindset, not worry too much about the past, because you can’t change the past. What you can change is what is going to come next, so all of us are quite focused on that. We are playing our hearts out.”
India had a tremendous campaign during the ODI World Cup 2023 when they won 10 back-to-back games ahead of the final against Australia. However, it was just one bad day of cricket and India lost the ODI World Cup despite being the so dominant team in the competition.
Rohit Sharma as a batsman scored a lot of runs and was among the top run scorers in the whole tournament. Rohit played every match with an attacking approach and started to hit big shots from the first ball. Other than being brilliant in the batting, the major highlight of the competition was the Indian pace attack.
The Indian pace attack of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Mohammed Siraj demolished the opposition batting lineup in every match and wrapped up Sri Lanka and South Africa under 100 runs. Shami and Bumrah were the top wicket-takers of the ODI World Cup and picked up 24 and 20 wickets respectively.
However, India now have the T20 World Cup 2024, the World Test Championship, and the Champions Trophy coming up in the upcoming years. The Rohit Sharma-led side will want to focus on all these upcoming ICC events and play the way they played in every ICC tournament. The Indian team has to capitalize on the crucial moments of the ICC knockouts and if they can do so, the ‘Men in Blue’ can very easily win the tournament.
Currently, India are playing against England in the five-match Test series which is very important from the perspective of the World Test Championship 2023-25.
