Sachin Tendulkar is revered as the god of cricket in India, but even the god was not immune to criticism in the country. The legendary batsman was the target of netizens and Twitterati after he tweeted with respect to the ongoing protests against the new farm laws.
After foreign celebrities started tweeting about the ongoing protests in India, Sachin had tweeted from his official Twitter account advising his countrymen to stay together in these conditions of chaos. He had also proposed that the issue was an internal matter and the outsiders can only be spectators but not participants.
Even the government was forced to make a statement after the ongoing protests got international attention. This led to many cricket fans and even journalists criticizing Tendulkar for not standing with the protestors and accused him of being a government stooge. However, there were some fans who agreed with what the cricketer had said.
“Sachin, Sachin” chants outside Tendulkar house
Even NCP President and former BCCI chief, Sharad Pawar had his say in the matter, warning Tendulkar to not comment on issues not related to cricket.
“Many people have reacted sharply to the stand taken by them (Indian celebrities). I would advise Sachin (Tendulkar) to exercise caution while speaking about any other field,” Pawar had said.
Despite facing severe heat from most of the protest supporters, Sachin Tendulkar received overwhelming support in a way that neither he nor his detractors would have expected. Times now reported that on Wednesday, several fans rallied around Sachin’s house to express their support for the cricketer.
The group felt that Sachin was being targeted unnecessarily for his comments on the issue. Several videos were uploaded on Twitter where fans were seen and heard with the famous ‘Sachin, Sachin, Sachin’ chants. The chants were similar to what used to the chants that reverberate throughout cricket stadiums across the world when the little master used to play for his country and walked out to bat.
Similar chants were heard quite loudly just outside Tendulkar’s residence in Mumbai. After Sachin Tendulkar’s tweet, many other cricketers including Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma, and others also tweeted with messages similar to what Tendulkar had posted in his tweet.
