Punjab Kings (PBKS) have an uphill task heading into the IPL 2024 mega auction. After yet another ordinary season, they need to identify the Indian players whom they can retain as the core of the side.
There are reports that PBKS is all set to sack their head coach Trevor Bayliss and seek a new head coach. As per reports, Wasim Jaffer is likely to replace him as the head coach.
Over the years, Punjab Kings have been underachievers in the IPL just like RCB. They have made it to the finals of the tournament just once and have not made it to the playoffs for a decade now.
They have been a franchise who have constantly chopped and changed their coach and captain combination. They have even changed their home base multiple times. However, nothing has resulted in anything positive.
After the recent meeting between the IPL franchises and the BCCI, almost all the franchises want the board to scrape the mega auction and also the Impact Player rule. PBKS owner Ness Wadia was involved in a heated exchange with KKR boss Shahrukh Khan but things did not escalate out of hand.
There were also talks about scraping the mega auction so that teams could retain much of the core of their side. Almost all the franchises responded positively to this suggestion by SRH co-owner Kavya Maran.

Rahul Chahar
Chahar the leg spinner has not been as useful for the franchise as he was with Mumbai Indians. Across three seasons for PBKS he has picked up just 32 wickets and has been expensive.
He has not been able to back up other bowlers as well. With Chahar out of the Indian cricket team and discarded for a while now, PBKS might look to replace him with a much-experienced spinner.
Harpreet Bhatia
Bhatia has been used as a cover by Punjab Kings. The MP batter has not been given a longer run by the franchise and has been used as a cover when the senior batters within the team have been rested. He played five matches across two seasons and scored just close to 70 runs for the franchise.
Tanay Thyagarajan
The Karnataka spinner was roped in by the Kings for 20 lakhs. However, with Harpreet Bhatia and Rahul Chahar as specialist spinners, he did not get a chance to play any matches this IPL season. He is yet to make his IPL debut for any team.
He made his List A debut for Hyderabad in the 2017–18 Vijay Hazare Trophy on 21 February 2018. He made his first-class debut for Hyderabad in the 2018–19 Ranji Trophy on 20 November 2018.
