Indian coach Gautam Gambhir gave the ultimate verdict of Shubman Gill being the most deserving player to attain the Test and ODI Captaincy on his merit, firing shots at Rohit Sharma. He highlighted India's dominance under Gill's leadership in England and has said that he deserves every bit of what he has got.

Shubman Gill has been appointed the Indian ODI skipper, replacing Rohit Sharma, for the upcoming series against Australia. He had also taken up the Test captaincy after Rohit announced his retirement from the longest format of the game.

However, despite Gill's widespread success as the Indian skipper, he has faced some backlash for the sudden snub of the veteran captain.

Gautam Gambhir shuts critics with 'Deserving' remark on Shubman Gill

The Indian coach, in his latest talk, has highlighted his faith in the Indian skipper, Shubman Gill, and has stressed the fact that Shubman had passed his leadership Test in England with flying colours.

“He’s already passed his toughest test in England in tough conditions. Important to stay in the present for now,” Gambhir said about Shubman Gill as the captain of India.

Gautam Gambhir himself has been blamed for being responsible for the snubbing of several big names and has also been said to be biased in handing the leadership roles to Shubman Gill. Answering to such criticism, he has retorted strongly, saying Shubman "deserves every bit of it."

“No one has done him a favour by making him the Test and ODI captain. He deserves every bit of it. I can’t ask for more from him. He passed the test in England. The team has responded well to his leadership,” he added.

Gautam Gambhir avoids a statement on Rohit-Virat's chances for the World Cup

After the conclusion of the second Test, Gautam Gambhir was asked about the future of Indian veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli and what the chances are of them featuring in the next World Cup in South Africa.

However, the Indian head coach seemed to be pretty unbothered by such long-term plans; he rather urged all to focus on the present, since the ODI World Cup is two years from now and a lot could change by that time.

But on the other hand, he has also accepted the fact that, undoubtedly, the two greats are quality players and their experience will come in handy under Australian conditions. Gambhir, as the coach, also wished luck to Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli for the upcoming tour.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli urged by a former teammate to play the Vijay Hazare Trophy

Ever since the Indian selector Ajit Agarkar had urged Indian Cricket legends Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to feature in the domestic tournament of the Vijay Hazare Trophy due to the availability of fewer ODI matches, several former players have come forward to suggest the same.

Now Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's former teammate Parthiv Patel has also urged the Indian greats to play the Vijay Hazare Trophy. India will play just around 14 games to the ODI World Cup with huge gaps, and hence the VHT would help them keep themselves match-ready in between the series.
