Gautam Gambhir challenges BCCI in interview: raises these demands to become India's Head Coach

Former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir is all set to become the head coach of the men's cricket team, as per the latest reports. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary, Jay Shah, and other board officials are to interview Gautam Gambhir for the India team head coach position in Mumbai today, June 18.

Rahul Dravid's contract as head coach of the Indian team will end after the T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and the USA. Dravid signed the contract before the 2021 T20 World Cup. He received a six-month extension after the 2023 ODI World Cup. Dravid hopes to conclude his tenure with an ICC trophy victory.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India officially invited applications for the position of India's head coach. The deadline for the applications ended on May 27. As per the job description, the selected candidate for the new India men's head coach will oversee all three formats from July 2024 to December 2027.

Gambhir represented the Men in Blue in 58 Tests, 147 ODIs, and 37 T20Is in his international career. The left-handed batter scored more than 10,000 international runs across three formats. He served as the mentor for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) during their winning campaign in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024.

Gautam Gambhir Raises These Demands To Become India's Head Coach

Gautam Gambhir has demanded several conditions for the head coach position, including complete control over the team and separate squads for white-ball and red-ball formats. The BCCI has reportedly accepted these terms and is eager to hire him, with his appointment expected to be confirmed soon.

“Gauti (Gautam Gambhir) will be traveling today to Mumbai around 12 pm for the interview at BCCI Headquarters. It is almost confirmed that he is going to be the next head coach as the BCCI has agreed to the terms he presented for the head coach. The new head coach of the men’s cricket team will soon be revealed. The meeting is scheduled between 2-4 pm,” a source privy to BCCI told IANS.

There Is No Bigger Honour Than Coaching The National Team - Gautam Gambhir

During a recent event, the 42-year-old said that coaching the national team would be the greatest honour. Gautam Gambhir highlighted that coaching the team means representing not only the 1.4 billion people of India but also Indians worldwide.

"There is no bigger honour than coaching the national team. I would love to coach the Indian team. There is no bigger honour than coaching your national team. You are representing 140 crore Indians and those across the globe as well," Gambhir said.

Gambhir was part of India's victorious 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup teams. The Indian team hasn't won a global tournament since the 2013 Champions Trophy under their last foreign coach, Duncan Fletcher of Zimbabwe.
